Introduction to Mpox (Monkeypox Disease) Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a viral zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family. First identified in 1958 during outbreaks among laboratory monkeys, mpox was initially named after these primates. However, its primary animal reservoir is believed to be rodents and small mammals. In 1970, the first human case was recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and since then, sporadic cases have been reported in Central and West Africa, with occasional outbreaks occurring outside of these regions.
