  Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906): The Maestro of Indian Art Biography: Raja Ravi Varma , born on April 29, 1848, in Kilimanoor, Travancore (present-day Kerala, India), was a trailblazing Indian painter recognized for his profound impact on the convergence of Indian classical traditions with European academic art styles. Born into the royal family of Travancore, Varma received formal art education under Rama Swami Naidu and later traveled to the royal court of Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal. He was the first Indian artist to extensively use oil paints, revolutionizing the traditional Indian art scene. The title of Raja was conferred by the Viceroy and Governor-General of India, Lord Curzon, as a personal distinction.
